Recommendations for Change
- # 147 |
|
This award will be presented annually to the NASMA registered jack whose get (both mules and donkeys) earn the most NASMA points at approved shows from January 1 to December 31 of that calendar year. More than one “offspring” sired by the jack must earn points for the jack to be eligible for the award. |

Justification and impact if rule is not changed |
| When this rule was initially written the association had few if any donkey classes or donkey exhibitors. As the association has grown so have the interest in and participation of donkeys and their owners. We now have 4 donkey divisions that represent the thriving donkey population of NASMA. The points that are earned by the donkey offspring of our NASMA registered jacks should matter equally to those of their mule cousins. The donkeys are charged equally for their registrations, entry fees and show fees, and they should be equally counted when calculating any year end points. All offspring’s accomplishments should matter when considering contributions to a jack’s end of year totals. When we specify “two or more mules” are we saying to our donkey members that their donkeys achievements don’t equal the achievements of the mules? Are we telling our breeders that their donkey offspring are not as important as their mule offspring? We should require two or more offspring of a registered jack, not specifying as either “two or more mules” or “two or more donkeys”, this would be the fair and unbiased way to reflect the accumulated points of multiple offspring for our NASMA jacks. Impact if this rule is not changed: A continuance of an unbalanced and untrue reflection of a NASMA registered jacks capabilities as a sire. For example for the 2012 show year a NASMA registered jack’s multiple offspring accumulated over 650 points but was not given the year end jack award because he had one mule offspring showing in 2012 and three donkey offspring. The year end title was given to a jack that had two mules showing with an accumulation of less than 50 total points. This will continue to happen if the wording is left unchanged and it will continue to reflect an inequality of mules over donkeys. |
